Sandra Berry-Bowers

Running

What's your full name?
Sandra Bowers

How long have you been competing?
I think I ran before I walked…but my first official ultra distance running race was in May 2005.

Where do you call home?
Born in Scotland, I now live and train mostly in England on the Wiltshire/ Hampshire Border.

Favorite event or place to practice?
My favourite place to train is wherever I feel inspired—this is normally anywhere off road, really early morning when the nocturnal wildlife is not yet sleeping.

Do you have a focus area within your sport?
Long distance running requires great mental strength. When everything hurts and the mind is telling you to stop, you don't. You dig deeper and reach another level. Every time it happens you dig deeper than you did the last time. Strength of the mind is the most important aspect of ultra running and to succeed one needs to be able to manage pain, a lot of pain!

What is the strangest thing that has happened to you while doing your sport?
Strange (in a very good way) is that I met the love of my life during a marathon. We started talking at the 25k point and have never stopped talking since!

Do you have a claim to fame?
My village knows me as the lady that runs with Huskies, and I carried the Olympic Torch in 2012!

Do you promote an annual event or are you involved in a charitable cause?
My partner and I foster dogs for Siberian Husky Welfare.

Any notable recent results?
In 2013, I represented Great Britain in the biennial IAU Ultra Trail World Championships.

Plans for the future:
I am working towards trying to run a GB qualification time for 24 hours running in Spring 2018.  I have a GB vest for 100k and Ultra Trail Running, would be nice to get the full set. I am also still working on that elusive sub4 minute mile (with dogs)

Anything else we should know about you or your sport?
My training partners are our pack of Siberian Huskies. They help me with speed work training and together we have run 15:06 for 5k and 4:13 for one mile. Without a doubt they help me both mentally and physically and are more famous than I am!!
